The general rule is that a child should see a pediatric dentist by the age of one. It is easy to overlook just how important it is for children to see a pediatric dentist as soon as they get their first tooth, but here are some reasons they should.
Prevention: Pediatric dentists are the most knowledgeable when it comes to a child’s teeth, so it is imperative to take your child in when their first tooth comes in. A pediatric dentist will be able to see if your child’s teeth look good and give you tips to prevent decay and cavities.
Early Detection: Baby teeth are extremely soft, which makes them very susceptible to decay and cavities. However, there are some ways that you can reverse decay on baby teeth if it is caught early by a pediatric dentist.
Treatment: When pediatric dentists notice decay in a child’s mouth that has not turned into a cavity yet, they may try removing plaque, cleansing any areas that have decay, or applying a dental sealant. Some pediatric dentists may also suggest a fluoride supplement if the child is not getting enough fluoride through water.
Reduce Dental Anxiety: Anxiety about the dentist is normal, especially for young children, but children will deal with dentist anxiety longer if they do not see a dentist as soon as they get their teeth.
